secretary of state hillary clinton called this a critical moment for the region. following a 24 hour cooling off period talks will resume on key issues like the israeli blockade. susan mcginnis starts us off in washington this morning. good morning to you. happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: good morning. happy thanksgiving. this is a very tenuous cease-fire. deep mistrusts remain on both sides. it feels like both sides have their finger on the trigger. residents are gathering their belongings and heading home. many took refuge in a united nations shelter while israel and the militant group hamas spent eight days in a bloody conflict. under the cease-fire agreement hamas promises to stop firing rockets. israel says it will end air strikes and will ease border restrictions that have stifled gaza's economy for years. after a deal was reached the

residents poured into the streets of gaza, cheers and celebratory gunshots replaced the sounds of gunfire. in tel aviv most israelis were happy to hear the news. >> i would like to believe that no fighting is always more good than fighting. >> reporter: egypt's new islamist government was the driving force behind the negotiations to end the conflict with diplomatic help from secretary of state hillary clinton. clinton spent two days shuttling between jerusalem, west bank and cairo. >> people of this region deserve a chance to live free from fear and violence and today's agreement is a step in the right direction. >> reporter: clinton expects egypt to play a key role in maintaining peace. now israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu said he's willing to give the cease-fire a chance but holds the possibility of resuming fighting.

head of hamas said israel is destined for defeat. >> susan mcginnis in washington on this thanksgiving morning. thank you so much. the islamist government of egypt is winning praise for its role in brokering the truce. clarissa ward is in cairo with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. happy thanksgiving. >> good to have you on this morning. egypt playing a key role in making this truce happen. what does this mean for the region as we look ahead? >> reporter: absolutely. you heard secretary clinton calling egypt a cornerstone of stability in this region, praising the government for its actions, for its calm throughout the last eight days. i think there had been some speculation or concern in the west as to how exactly egypt's new islamist government would react to this type of situation. they have to walk a very fine line politically between appeasing their muslim

brotherhood but making sure nothing jeopardizes that peace treaty between israel and egypt which has been in effect for 32 years. everyone is in agreement that egypt did a good job of balancing those different concerns and as a result egypt has emerged through this as a key player in the region. >> let's talk about this cease-fire. history tells us that these don't often last very long. what could be at issue here in the next 24 to 48 hours? >> reporter: the key issue in this cease-fire is the third component, the opening up of gaza's borders, the lifting possibly of the israeli blockade that's been imposed on gaza now for five years. israel is very concerned that the minute that blockade gets lifted there will be an influx of weapons into the gaza strip, weapons that could potentially get into the hands of militants. really think of this cease-fire as a sort of a band aid. if you don't treat the underlying wound underneath the

infection doesn't go away so there's still a lot of hard work to be done and concessions to be made on both sides. >> clarissa ward in cairo this morning. for the first time ambassador susan rice is defending remarks she made about the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. the september 11th attack killed four americans including ambassador chris stevens. rice has been criticized for blaming the attack on mob violence. >> when discussing the attacks against our facilities in benghazi, i relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community. i made clear that the information was preliminary and that our investigations would give us the definitive answers. >> rice is taking a lot of heat from republican lawmakers in part because it's believed she's president obama's choice to be his next secretary of state. the governor of illinois has five days to schedule an election to replace congressman jesse jackson jr.

jackson resigned yesterday two weeks after he was elected to a ninth term in congress. he cited his treatment for bipolar disorder and acknowledged a federal investigation into possible misuse of campaign funds. millions of americans will travel today for their thanksgiving feast. many started yesterday. here in new york those trying to take a train out of penn station ran into switching problems. amtrak and two commuter railroads were shut town for more than an hour. for a lot of folks in the northeast trying to recover from hurricane sandy this will not be an easy holiday season. one neighborhood had a thanksgiving dinner thanks to the generosity of their neighbor. drew levinson reports. >> reporter: to norah white stands on her front porch looking at soggy piles of books and bags that once were in her basement. >> a little bit of this and that.

that's what this is. >> reporter: she just got her power back and still has no heat. >> been tough. >> how do you stay warm in the house? >> blankets. blankets and more blankets. >> reporter: she's the pta president at her son's high school. he's a freshman at queens high school for information research and technology in far rockaway, new york. the school was badly damaged and just reopened monday. titus like the hundreds of other students here at this high school have had very few warm meals over the past few weeks. so for many this day before thanksgiving meal is their thanksgiving meal. they say thursday they won't be eating turkey and dressing instead cleaning up from the storm. school principal knew her students and families were suffering. it was her idea to raise money to provide this thanksgiving feast. >> it's a learning place not only for my students but the community. so i opened my doors to them. >> reporter: they are grateful. >> happy to have a hot meal?

the balloons are inflated ready for the 86th annual thanksgiving day parade. 3 million people will line the streets of manhattan as the giant balloons march downtown. another 50 million will watch from home. the start of today's parade will take place in just a few hours and wcbs-tv is on the parade route.

with a look at last minute preparations. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we're here along central park west and you can already feel the excitement in the air. i want to show you the start of the balloon route. you can see her there, she will lead the way, hello kitty, one of four brand new balloons this year. we were out here yesterday too and watching all the crews get ready. they are here making sure everything is safe and ready to go. thousands of people join them. they are just so excited to watch these balloons come alive, and it's special for them, especially because of what so many people have been through this year, post-sandy. several storm survivors were out here and will be out here today. 5,000 tickets were given to them by macy's and the mayor's office. they will be here to take this all in. you can see behind me crews are pulling more stars and getting the rest of the floats ready. it is expected to be packed here in just a few hours. people getting their prime seats for this wonderful event.

a new study out this morning raises questions about the benefits of mammograms. researchers found breast cancer screening detects twice as many early stage cases but many never develop into full blown breast cancer. the study found more than a million women received unnecessary treatment for cancer and mammograms have a small effect of lowering the mortality rate. hostess has been given the go ahead to shut down operations. on wednesday a judge said they can start selling its assets and laying off their 18,000 workers. one estimate says the 82-year-old company can fetch up to $2.4 billion in liquidation. in england santa claus needed rescuing after he got stuck in mid-air. his beard got stuck in the ropes. he tried to make a grand entrance at a mall over the

recently gave up their post as long time fans. >> reporter: it was cold the night this high school in minnesota played its final football game of the year, cold enough to make your eyes water which is what i thought were happening to these parents. than i got a closer look. i saw she was feeling a lot more than the wind. >> it's been a great run. >> reporter: for them this game marked the end of an era, the end of their rein as two of the longest football parents in america. in the past quarter of a century they have been to countless games, cheering on countless sons. >> how many boys do you have? do you know? that was the easy question. >> 12 boys. >> reporter: 12 boys. 12 football players. spaced out just so that at least one of them has been on every team every year since 1989.
